Delta State Government To Always Advocate For More Citizen Participation
The Delta State Government has vowed to always advocate for more citizen participation by opening up the budget process to its citizens.
The Commissioner, Ministry of Economic Planning, Dr. Kingsley Emu made the vow when he played host to members of the Social Action Group who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Asaba.
Dr. Emu said that for budgetary process to be thorough, all Local Government Areas in the State should be involved.
According to him, because the State is committed to Transparent transactions, Government took over 11 town hall meetings where people's needs where included on the budget process.
The Commissioner further disclosed that 29 Members of the House of Assembly and 25 commissioners in the State also made their contributions and inputs which were included in the budget.
He explained that an interactive Exco Session was held in which the views of all the commissioners who felt that their constituencies were not properly represented were taken. .
Dr. Emu advised that the group's intervention in the budget should be prior and proactive rather than post mortem and reactionary and that they need a good knowledge of the environment to participate in the budget process.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the Social Action Group, Mr. Okpunor Chuks commended the State Government for taking the bold and giant strides in the budgetary process and implemention by way of investment in infrastructure such as roads, power etc.
Mr. Okpunor appealed to Government to always involve the citizens in the process of budget formulation as this will give them a sense of belonging in governance and Government activities and lend more credibility to the laudable strides of Government in promoting accountability and transparency.
