Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, laying a wreath in honour of the falling heroes during the grand finale of the 2018 Armed Forces remembrance day in Asaba.

Okowa, Others Lay Wreaths, As Nigerians Mark Armed Forces Remembrance Day

As Nigerians all over the world today (15/01/18) marked the country’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State led top military officers to lay wreaths at the status of the Unknown Soldier.

The Governor who arrived the Cenotaph, Asaba at exactly 10 am for the brief but solemn ceremony, inspected guard of honour mounted by  the Nigerian Army, Navy, Airforce and members of the Nigerian Legion.

A minute silence was observed while a 21-gun salute was taken in honour of the departed heroes of the country.

High point of the event was the release of pigeons by Governor Okowa signalling peace and the people’s determination to avoid any action that could lead to violence or war.

January 15 of every year was set aside as Armed Forces Remembrance Day in honour of those who lost their lives during the Nigerian civil war and for those who also, fought in different peace keeping missions.

It is worthy to state that the laying of wreaths climaxed the activities of this year’s event which has also, featured emblem launch and special thanksgiving service in honour of the deceased and those traumatised by wars.

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori represented by Hon. Pat Ajudua (Oshimili North Constituency), Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Umukoro, Commanders of different military formations in Delta State, Commissioner of Police in the state, representative of the state’s traditional rulers’ council, religious leaders, Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, representative of the widows, among others laid wreaths at the event.
