GOVERNMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
DELTA STATE MARKS 2008 BREASTFEEDING DAY

It is hereby announced for the information of the general pubic, particularly nursing mothers in Delta State, that the 2008 Breastfeeding week will hold from Friday 1st, August to Thursday 7th, August, 2008.

The theme for this year's celebration is MOTHER SUPPORT: GOING FOR THE GOLD. In order to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding to babies and mothers, the Delta State Primary Heath Care Development Agency will organize a baby show competition to mark the end of the week long celebration on Thursday 7th, August, 2008 at the Conference Hall, New Secretariat Complex, Asaba.

Nursing mothers in the State are by this announcement enjoined to take note and participate in all the activities lined up to celebrate the breastfeeding week.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION RELEASE EXAM TIME TABLE

The 2008 promotion examination in JSS 1, 11 and SS 1, SS 11 in Public Secondary Schools in the State have been announced.

In a press release issued today in Asaba by the Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Ifeanyi Agbeyeke, said that the examination in both Junior and Secondary Schools would commence on Wednesday, 6th August and end on Tuesday, 12th August, 2008. The papers on Wednesday, 6th August for JSS 1 and 11 are Introductory Technology, Fine Art and Agricultural Science/Shorthand, Chemistry/Typewriting, Literature in English and commerce are to be taken by Students in SS 1 and SS 11.

Mr. Agbeyeke, directed Principals in the affected schools, as matter of urgency, to collect the timetable for the other subjects from their Chief Inspectors of Education for onward transmission to the students. He advised Parents and Guardians to ensure that their children and wards return to school immediately in order to take part in the revision exercise and participate in the examination, as there is no provision for supplementary examination.

The Permanent Secretary also directed the Chief Inspectors of Education to ensure that the promotion examinations in the primary schools in their respective Local Government Areas were concluded within the same period.

Meanwhile, all Public and Private primary and secondary schools in the Stated will vacate for the 2007/2008 academic session on Friday, 15th August, 2008, while the 2008/2009 academic session will commence on Sunday, 14th September, 2008 when the boarders were expected to arrive their schools for proper academic work to begin the next day, Monday, 15th September,2008.

DELTA STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY COMMISSION ANNUAL LECTURE

It is hereby announced for the information of the general public, particularly Deltans, that the 3rd Delta State House of Assembly Service Commission Distinguished Annual Lecture Series will hold on Tuesday 5th, August, 2008 at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba at 11:00am.

The topic for this year's lecture which will be Chaired by His Excellency, Dr. Alex Ekwueme former Vice President of Nigeria, is "Mutuality of Purpose: Citizens Role and Government Responsibility Towards Peace and Security" and will be delivered by General Alexander Ogomudia (Retired) former Chief of Defense Staff.

His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan, Governor of Delta State is expected to attend the ceremony as Chief Host and will deliver a keynote address. The Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony is His Excellency, Professor Amos Aigbe Utuama (SAN), Deputy Governor of Delta State while the Right Honourable (Barr.) Martin Okonta, Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly is the Guest of Honour.

Accordingly, members of the Legislature, the Judiciary, Civil Commissioners, Chairmen and members of the State, Local Government and House of Assembly Service Commissions, Chief of Staff, Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen, Secretaries, Heads of Personnel Management and Treasurers of Local Government Councils, Traditional Rulers, Service Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants and Civil Servants and indeed the general public are by this announcement invited to attend the lecture. Invited guests are to be seated before 11:00am.

The State Government has said massive construction of roads and drainages in Asaba and other parts of the State will commence fully in September.
The Commissioner for Works Mr. Paul Osaji, stated this today while speaking with out news crew on plans to control flooding and erosion across the State. Mr. Osaji, said various payment have disbursed to contractors to commence work as soon as the rain subsides, adding that the Ministry of works has a master plan for the drainage of the State Capital.

The Commissioner who disclosed that over ten new township roads are to constructed in the dry season appealed to Deltans to stop dropping refuse in side gutters constructed across their residence so as not to obstruct the flow of flood during and after rainfall. He said Government is aware of the erosion ravaging major towns across the State and advised land developers not to build on areas where the drains will pass through.

Mr. Osaji said the present administration will not fold its hands and allow the people suffer the menance of erosion and called on the private sector to assist in finding a lasting solution to the problem.

The State Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama SAN has charged members of the Senate Committee on Work not to compromise quality in monitoring Federal Government projects in the State. Professor Utuama gave the charge today when members of the Senate Committee on Work who were on a tour of Federal Government Roads in the South South and South East Zones paid him a courtesy call in his Office in Asaba.

The Deputy Governor said Nigeria is deficient in the area of infrastructural development and charged agencies in charge of providing or monitoring such projects to live up to expectation. He stated that Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan-led administration attached much importance to infrastructure development as the Direct Labour Agency had been working in collaboration with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency FERMA, to ensure that both State and Federal roads in the State were in good condition.

Professor Utuama lauded the efforts of former Governor Chief James Ibori for bequeathing to the State a good road network, including bridges. The leader of the team, Senator Julius Ucha said they were in the State to visit Federal Government Project, especially roads and bridges.

Senator Ucha who lauded the importance of the on-going Ebu bridge awarded to Inter-Bau Construction said the bridge, when completed, would made the journey from the South East to Abuja shorter. He commended the Delta State Government for its efforts at ensuring that infrastructure are provided for its citizens.
