DELTA STATE GOVERNOR, DR. EMMANUEL EWETA UDUAGHAN’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE.

Fellow Deltans,

As we usher in the year 2008, we have a lot to thank the Almighty God for in 2007. As human experiences go, I am sure it has been a mixed bag. It may have been good for some, and for some others, not so good; such is life. But being alive to see another year should rekindle in us the hope of a better tomorrow. I am very confident that our tomorrow will certainly be a better one than our yesterday.

As a government which you voted into office, we have from the beginning understood very clearly the challenges we faced and, had, on assuming office, rolled up our sleeves to tackle these challenges. Today, as I look around I can say some progress has been made. The building blocks for a more prosperous Delta State anchored on the three point agenda of Peace and Security, Human Capital Development and Infrastructure Development, are being irreversibly laid.

I dare say that these modest achievements in the seven months we have been in office could not have been possible had you, fellow Deltans, not cooperated with this administration. I say thank you and ask that you continue to give us the support we need to propel the state forward in the New Year.

I would also encourage us, as we reflect on the events of the past year, to endeavour above all to be tolerant of each other. We should not see differences of opinion as sign of division; rather it is an opportunity to accommodate other views and be guided as we make progress. We should not see ethnic differences as a sign of separation; rather it should challenge us to build greater unity of understanding. Great societies thrive on overcoming great challenges.

Ours cannot be different. In this connection, I want to say that I never viewed those who constructively criticized our government as enemies; indeed, I welcomed such opinions, because, as I remarked in the past, I had actually learnt a lot from the opinions they hold. As we enter the New Year, I do not intend to change our attitudes towards our critics; we will remain open to constructive ideas and opinions.

Delta State is a land of promise with enormous potential and, we, as a government, are determined to ensure we tap to full its potential for the benefit of our people. We will however, make the state very uncomfortable for the criminal minded, who would attempt to frighten, kill or deny Deltans with legitimate aspirations the peace of mind to enjoy the labours of their sweat.

Delta State cannot be the place for such people in 2008 unless they depart from their wicked ways and embrace the vast opportunities we are opening up for our people. I am therefore assuring all Deltans and investors of their security in the New Year as the government will do all within its power to keep the peace and protect lives and property in the State.

Once again I wish you all a happy New and Prosperous 2008.
May God continue to bless us. Amen.

Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan

Governor, Delta State
