Welcome to Delta State

Delta State was created on August 27. 199| out of the former Bendel State. The Bendel was derived from Benin and Delta, the two provinces that made up the former Midwest Region created by plebiscite in August I963 from the Western Region. When the military regime announced new states on May 27, 1967, the Midwest region become a State. The name was changed to Bendel in February 1976. In State Creation of 199|, the Asaba division of the old Benin province was added to the Delta province to make up Delta State

GEOGRAPHY

Delta State lies roughly between longitude 5.00′ and 6.45 East and latitude 5.00 and 6.30 North. The total land area of the state is |7.440sq km and about one third of this is swampy and waterlogged. Delta is bounded on the North by Edo State, and on the East by Anambra State on the south by Rivers and Bayelsa states. The Atlantic Ocean forms the Western boundary while the north East boundary is Ondo state. Delta is endowed with many rivers and waterways. The major rivers are the Niger, Ase, Forcados, Warri, Ethiope, Jamiesson. Benin, Escravos and Ossiomo.

OIL AND GAS

Delta State is one of the major producers of oil and gas in Nigeria. The state is located in the oil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria and produces about 30% of the country’s total oil and gas which accounts for a significant amount of current foreign exchange earnings. Natural gas in Delta State is more abundant than crude oil for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plants. Its reserves accounts for an estimated 40% of the national total of I50 trillion cubic feet of gas. One third of the daily volume of oil comes from the State, which also has some of Nigeria’s maior oil -based industries and facilities. These include a refinery, a petrochemical complex, a gas plant, steel complex, two gas-fired electricity stations and an oil export terminus. It is for this pivotal position in the Nigerian Economy that Delta State is referred to as “The Big Heart” of the Country.

 

CAPITAL CITY

Asaba, the capital of the State, is located on the right bank of the River Niger. Asaba is clean with a network of good, nicely-lit streets, standard hotels and communication facilities.

 
 
PEOPLE AND CULTURE

 

The main language group and nationalities in Delta State are the Urhobos. lbos, ljaws, ISOKO

and Itsekiri. They have identical customs, beliefs and culture. The cultural identity is mamed in festivals, traditional religion and marriage ceremonies. The system of traditional administration is similar: so are the folklore, dances, arts, crafts and mode of dressing. There

is freedom of worship and a high level of religious tolerance in the State. Christianity. and African Traditional Religion are prevalent.

Delta State is a haven of tourism on account of its warm and friendly people, spectacular festival, the splendor of traditional architecture, bio-diversity of the ecosystern, historical monuments and sites. Among these tourist attractions are the Source of the Ethiope River at Umuaja in Ukwuani L.G.A., Nana’s Palace in Koko, Obi’s Palace in ldumuje Ugboko, Obi’s Palace Aboh, and Holy Bible site at Araya in Isoko South L.G.A. Fantastic sites and leisurecentres include the Ughotan Natural Harbour in Okpe LGA., the Delta Panorarma, Effurun, the Bomadi Beach, the Forcados Bay and Oil Exports terminus. The Abraka Turf, Relics of l6th century in Ode- Itsekiri Ethiope Bridge in Sapele, the Jamiesson River Bridge at Oghara, the Forcados River Bridge and the Olona Ranch. There are also the Niger Bridge, Mango Park House, and the Lander Brothers Anchorage and Cemetery in Asaba, and the Delta State Leisure park at Oleri, Udu Local Government Area.
