DELTA: Udumurhie win 2024 Osubi community Unity Cup

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, was among spectators who witnessed the grand finale of the annual Osubi Unity Cup, 2024 football competition.

The grand finale, which was held on Sunday at the Osubi Community Secondary School field, had the two finalists- Udumurhie and Team Elite- lock horns in the battle for the grand prize.

In an interview with newsmen, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Roy Uruemu, said that the competition had been on for the past four years, adding that this year’s edition was its 4th.

He said, “normally, it is a traditional competition with the purpose of celebrating our uncommon unity, oneness and peace within our community and other communities around us.

“It has also become a major end- of- year celebration for the Osubi people with also the benefits that come with sporting activities.

Uremu said that 288 young men participated in this year’s competition, adding, “it is a local football competition but we do give room for some guest teams and, in this year’s competition, we had three guest teams and nine local teams. The runner up is a guest team”.

The two finalists ended in a goalless draw after ninety minutes of regular play, following which the game was decided by a penalty shootout in which Udumurhie won by 7 to 6 goals.

The Governor presented the trophy to the winners and a cheque of N5 million to the runner up. Team Elite got N3m, while the second runner up received N2 million.

The Governor’s son, Sheriff Oborevwovri Junior, who put the annual football competition together, gave the two of his loyalists, Omonigho Francis Agbinone and Paul Idike a new Corolla car each for their hard work and dedication.

One of the dignitaries present at the competition was a former Super Eagles player, Victor Ikpeba, who commended the Governor’s son for organizing the competition.

He said; “I grew up in Sapele not far from here; as a young boy, we did play this community football and I think it’s great for the son of the Governor to do this.

“He is giving something back to the community and I think it’s an opportunity to inspire the young men around this community. It is also great that these footballers have seen some club agents here and myself.

“It is a good thing for the community. My presence can be an inspiration to the players, too.

“It is good for bonding; you can see the fans from this community coming around to watch the finals. We all know the importance of football. Without football, I won’t be here today.”

In the third place match played earlier, Esiowa team defeated Okomowha 4:0 to clinch the third position.
