Inter-Regional Collaboration in Maritime Security Key To Sustaining Economic Activities In The Riverine Communities.
The relative peace and rapid socio- economic development in the state have been attributed to the peacekeeping initiatives, Inter-regional collaboration, and inclusiveness in ethnic diversity efforts by the state government.
The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu disclosed this today when he declared open the Ministerial Joint Briefing organized as part of activities for the study tour of Delta State by the participants of the Naval Welfare Course 9, of the Naval War College, Calabar.
Dr. Emu said the various Conflict Resolutions Councils set up by the State Government have helped maintain peace, especially in the riverine areas.
The SSG stated that though the State is one of the foremost producer of oil, with 40% of proven gas reserve, the non-oil sector contributes 51.7% to the State Gross Domestic Product ( GDP), of which 13 3 % comes from the agricultural sector.
Dr. Emu noted that recently, the State Executive Council awarded N276 billion naira for massive infrastructure development, especially for roads construction which he said will further open up economic activities in the State, prevent rural to urban migration as well as reduce the cost of logistics and mobility usually characterized by bad roads.
He stressed the need for more inter-regional collaboration in maritime security, which will boost maritime activities in the riverine areas and open it up for more development.
The Commandant of the Naval Warfare Course, Naval War College, Calabar, Rear Admiral Olatunde Olodude said their study tour of the State would reveal the effort of the State government in maritime security, while affirming that so far, they have seen greater collaboration and support of the State government to security agencies especially in the maritime sector.
